Overlander to cease in NZ (Auckland to Wellington)

I wish NZ would adopt a similar policy to Iceland's - phasing out the use of oil. In that case a good policy would be to electrify the remaining part of the route. Oil is going to continue to rise in price anyway. NZ, like Iceland, has plenty of indigenous sources of energy.

It's a pity that NZ is stuck with the Cape gauge, when a world standard gauge would have allowed much higher speeds, able to compete with air.

I've just linked to the same story .
Its been rumoured for the last few months .
I used to take this train often from Hamilton ( nearest station to here ) to Palmerston north , to visit my parents.
