For anyone who might be interested, here are a few pics I took at Moscow's Park Pobedy (Victory Park) metro station three weeks after its opening in 2003:

Why can't we build subways like that in this country?

welcome to the railroad net , and especially the worldwide forum . I read your report on your russian trip in the amtak forum , and if youd like to expand on it here , that would be most interesting .

Which country? This is an international forum.

Stockholm has some outstanding metro stations, apparently sculpted out of the rock. The newest stations in London, on the Jubilee line extension, are also spectacular, bot don't display art.

Washington DC has some quite well built stations. New York's subway is very old and so has badly designed stations.

Some Paris Metro stations, especially the Louvre station, display art.

The Moskva Metro was intended by Stalin to be a people's Palace, and why not? It is interesting that the newest stations keep up the tradition.

My apologies, I didn't realize that my location wasn't automatically displayed. I meant USA.

I haven't been to Stockholm (yet), but I rode the subways in London (including the new Jubilee line), Paris, and DC, and I wasn't too impressed. Even the "modern" stations tend to be utilitarian steel-and-concrete caverns; little is done to create a pleasant environment. The DC stations all look exactly the same and tend to have poor lighting.

Yes, some Stalin-era stations are just breathtakingly spectacular. Here's an example in St. Petersburg:

Station design took a huge nose-dive under Khrushchev, who took it upon himself to fight "architectural excesses." A lot of mediocre stations were built during that period, like this one:

After Khrushchev, station design gradually improved again. Modern stations tend to be beautiful, but in a more elegant, understated kind of way, unlike the Stalin-era neoclassical palaces. Here are a few more recently opened stations, in Moscow and St. Petersburg:

I think you mean: we did it ourselves, without outside help.

RONIS DM joked...

"P.S. Russian tourist don't wallk underground, but tourists in Moscow look on underground :)"

Do you mean that Russian tourists don't just walk underground, but look AT the underground? Meaning that the toursits don't just use the Metro to get from one place to another, but that the Metro is something tourists go to see as well?

I am hoping to one day go and see the Metro, as I am very impressed with the architecture (I sudied architecture at the university for two years)... and I like trains and also am interested in Russian history and culture.

I took it as a joke, and I was on the "other side" during the "cold war."

But, yes, there may be a few who might not understand the joke. Just one of the problems with written humor. But, I still want humor here, I like jokes... just keep them clean, no swear words.
