The Sunday New York Times includes a Travel section, often delivered to residences on Saturday. Sometimes, these articles have an earlier date on the web. A friend tipped me off to "Ukrainian Railroad Ladies," a beautiful photo essay of women guarding the road crossings of Ukraine. It seems that the crossings are equipped with automatic gates, but they are watched by uniformed women who live in raised, decorative and fortified cabins. The women seem to be in contact with dispatchers and adjacent crossing guards. The article does not give much technical information, except to imply that a rolled-up yellow flag is "All okay." The guards at their cabins display confidence. Among the 65 comments one claimed American management would disapprove of lace curtains.

The NY Times sometimes blocks the reader with a paywall, and it sometimes lets all read for free.

Please, if you can add information about these guards and crossings, make your comment here. Thanks!
