Since the timetable changes in May, more than 2,000 services have been cancelled between the two towns in north west England, a figure that rises every day.

The breaking up of British Rail into numerous, often small, operating companies, has produced numerous inefficient and fairly incompetent companies, They have demonstrated the usefulness of a single organisation that British Rail was. The Tories complained that it was inefficient. They have shown that splitting it into smaller companies has produced numerous inefficient and expensive companies that seem unable to provide a reliable service.

Much of the rest of the world would be happy with hourly service on the mainlines , let alone a branchline.
It just goes to show , if the service is there , people will use it , and come to rely on it.

But too often the service is not reliably hourly. Too many trains are cancelled, or unreasonably late. People are not getting to work on time, and therefore losing money, or even losing their jobs, or sometimes being forced to move nearer their work because transport is no longer reliable. Breaking up British Rail was not the "liberating" experience the Tory ideologues imagined.

Northern Rail which operates service in the north of England was identified this week as the most unreliable company in the country. I live near South Western Railway - same franchisee - which took over the electrified lines from Waterloo to Weymouth and Exeter and is plagued by frequent strikes, meaning that travel on Saturdays is very uncertain.
