Last September, I took pics of a late BFSI at Lime Lake:

BFSI waiting for a crew change at Lime Lake: 6416, 3341, 3063, 301 and approx. 72 cars.

6416: http://photos.greatrails.net/s/?p=233128" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
3341: http://photos.greatrails.net/s/?p=233129" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and http://photos.greatrails.net/s/?p=233130" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
3063: http://photos.greatrails.net/s/?p=233131" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
301: http://photos.greatrails.net/s/?p=233132" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

#626 and #926 headed to Arcade Jct. with 10 cars at Chaffee on Aug. 30, 2016:

SIRI parked at Salamanca on July 17:

An early SIBF with 3063, 3330, 457, 3323 and approx. 72 cars on July 4 at Arcade Jct:

3063, 3330, 457, 3323 and approx. 72 cars.

BF-1 with 3 locos (1506, 626, 887) at Arcade Jct. on May 4:

http://photos.greatrails.net/s/?p=230174" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And on April 13:

The B&P Buffalo based local BF-1 has its work cut out for them at Arcade Junction. Just a small passing siding and over 25 cars to shuffle around. #1509 doesn't make it down to Arcade very much. #887 is a frequent visitor.

I don't know for sure, could be a stand-by heater for when the unit is shut down in cold weather. Those things have changed over the years and I no longer know what a modern one looks like.

Quoted:

"They were ordered originally from GMD Canada with the larger fuel tanks in order to be able to make a complete round trip from Sept-Îles to Schefferville and return without refuelling in ore service. The two main reservoirs were moved up inside the carbody behind the compressor. The rear door on the right side with the louvers allows the automatic purge valves to vent the moisture from the compressed air and access to the related equipment including the main reservoir safety valve.

The 5 original SD40s (200-204) had the usually seen main reservoir arrangement used by almost every other road and were not equipped with automatic purging valves equipped with heating elements when built. The main reservoir air would freeze below -40F. The current auto purge valves with heating elements to allow moisture to be purged from the air supply without freezing were originally developed and tested in-house and their use became universal. These features were retained on the rebuilds and an air dryer was added to the compressed air supply as well. The piping seen up top is the normal compressor aftercooling piping loop to main reservoir number 1 moved to the ouside of the carbody as the space it would normally occupy beneath the frame is taken up by the enlarged fuel tank and it makes eminent good sense to move it there given the interior location of the two main reservoirs."

Thanks Charles. That's a new one on me - I'd love to check that out in person.

I wonder if long-time operation of the spitters in very cold temps causes an accumulation of ice on the running board below them.

I give you points for responding. To me it seemed more like a demand than a request. And of course only crickets chirping now that you took the time.

Guess his momma skipped teaching "please" and "thank you". Image

Actually I saw something maybe 3 or 4 months ago, where all their symbols got changed around. I did not save it but maybe somebody else on here has it.

I'm amused, amazed, intrigued, whatever term you care to use, at the train symbols in use on some railroads these days. Different designations for type of traffic, date, priority, origin and destination, and color of the engineer's hat. Instead of FD-4, QD-97, or DRS-7, it's alphabet soup. I was emailing a retired rail and he told of working a BN train designated EOLWWUM306. Makes me think of the old song that went "ooh-eee, ooh ah-ah, ting tang, walla-walla-bing-bang". Some of today's symbols are getting pretty close to that! Image

B&P BF-1 works primarily in the greater Buffalo area, including Buffalo Creek Yard. I've also noticed a 2nd local working in the yard at the same time*, but don't have a symbol for it. Does anyone else know that symbol? Thanks in advance.
