Woodland Valley Road crossing, Phonecia, sometime in the 1960’s.

Photo taken by Douglas Thornton. His family owned a bungalow on the Esopus Creek.
As kids, when we heard the whistle blow, we ran like heck to the crossing.
Watching cars being switched out was fascinating to us kids.
Awesome memories.

This came across my Google News feed this morning, very nice opinion piece...

Fair Use:
The Catskill Mountain Railroad has had dramatic success as a tourist railroad in recent years and has been a significant source of revenue for Ulster County. In 2019, its ridership was up nine percent to 41,115 passengers. Its revenues were up four percent to $1,490,000.

Some recent photos of the CMRR:

The CMRR last week brought down 2 additional flats from Kingston. We now have a 5 car train:

We are limiting capacity to 25% or 60 per train to maintain social distancing guidelines.

The CMRR added an additional flat car to the train last month - our former crane tender - so we now have a 6 car flat train. We previously brought both flats down from Kingston:

We are also adding canopies to all the flat cars so we can continue to operate during less friendly weather.

On a separate note, the CMRR was allowed to salvage all the rail and OTM at our former Cornell Street yard. Here is a recent photo:

The rail and 2 switches - all 105lb Dudley - will be available for a future yard for the CMRR, wherever that will be.

Somehow I missed those pics when first posted. Good to see the old NYC in action! Any shots of the caboose? Presumably wooden ones back then.

Does there come a point where the weather is just too cold to run with the open air cars? I mean if it's rainy, cold and windy like it was today I can't picture riding, canopy or not.

I don't know if applying the things say Amtrak does would let you salvage some November and December trips, or not. If those ex-LIRR cars have the seating unaltered, maybe only use every third row, groups of no more than four, that sort of thing. Probably more important to keep the county happy with you and lose some revenue though than push to run for some mediocre rides and get someone's underwear in a bunch.

But, given there's no telling how long this situation will last it might be good to get with the county and say "what can we do, can we do (X, Y, Z)? Here is our plan to try to work within current guidelines." Maybe they say no now, but you show them you're serious about following the guidelines they become more open to it in the spring.
