I received a rather amusing chuckle out of this, what does a fictitious paper railroad with no track or equipment know about competition??

Probably something again to do with the Dunellen rail yard he tried to run.

Last I had heard he had aquired a passenger car from somewhere off the CP several months ago. It sat at Manville Yard on a flatcar (no sign of the passenger car's trucks anywhere) and I'm guessing it was bound for Dunellen, so who knows maybe he's planning on starting up a "competitive" railroad museum, er rust collection!

He doesn't know too much about being a good businessman, either. He never got back to me about one of the coaches in Boonton. Too late now-

who's operating the Bridgewater recycling facility? Is it someone else?

I'm a little hesitant to laugh about someone else's railroad operation...they've committed alot more capital and effort than I have. Best wishes to them.

The same business that runs NJRC in South Kearny operates the Bridgewater facility.

I have to ask,is that 800 scale feet or 800 actual feet of track in your basement? In HO, that would be about 13.3 miles, pretty impressive.

Gotta get out and see you guys, Meghan; thats a lot of flex-track!

Does anyone know just what the plans are for that passenger car shell on the TTX flat? I saw it in Manville yard this summer. Is it still there? And I wonder who is paying the car hire for the TTX, and with what-

Is this Dunellen Yard off of the Raritan Valley Line or is there some other Dunellen Yard off the Lehigh Line or PRS? I can't think of any sidings off the LL in that area.....i dunno the PRS, but I did think that was Dunellen that far South.

Im qualified on the RVL, and I know Dunellen Yard, but never heard of the Valstir Ind? NJT calls the track that parallels the RVL on teh south side the Rock Industrial, is that it? Or is this the track that heads east from the crossover to 1 Main, (on the north side) that disappears into a wall of trees?

The track on the north side.

ohhhhh i hope they had a chain saw in their big bag of tricks....hahah

In case anyone never noticed this location, the tracks literally go into a wall of trees - there is a solid wall of very dense trees in between the main and the factory back there. In front of the trees is nice, clean ballast - i guess that's as far as the weedsprayer can reach hahaa. It almost looks like its something you would see on a layout where a track just goes into a backdrop and just ends.

Lots of interesting track and switches/sidings/structures in that area that would be great for modeling.... :)

Meghan wrote:That is the right place. The original notice says "the former National Starch and Chemical Company property in Plainfield and in Dunellen, New Jersey, on the south side of W. Front Street, between Jefferson and Rock Avenues"

The chainsaw work should be seem easy. Remember that several years ago these two tried to claim some former Maryland and Pennsylvania trackage in Baltimore claiming it could have been operated by the Pennsylvania and was therefore never abandoned. If they had been successful they would have had to restore a ramp from the B&O main and regauge the Baltimore Streetcar Museum to standard.

Happy Boxing Day
Meghan :-)
I believe you are referring to the case that was written up in 2007 by the Baltimore City Paper?

Meghan wrote:Grandfather (Trainlawyer) posted here and on RYPN on many of the legal shenanigans these two were involved in.

The City Paper article is primarily about a piece of property northwest of Baltimore along the Northern Central and a tie-in With the Georges Creek Line which Riffin subsequent lost (without ever successfully establishing himself as a common carrier) through bankruptcy and how his being a railroad in the west end of the state exempted him from environmental regulation on a completely discontiguous, non-rail-served parcel in the east. The Streetcar Museum was almost a side note.

Aside from claiming that the Northern Central Trail and the Baltimore Light Rail Lines were active railroads which he had the right to operate, he has tried to claim that he is not subject to state motor vehicle laws because he is a railroad. He and Strohmeyer have also tried to claim The Southern Tier, part of the Camden and Amboy, Bridgewater Resorces, a hotel parking lot in Mississippi, a vacant lot in Los Angeles, an overpass in Oklahoma, and a couple of abandoned lots in Bayonne and Jersey City by virtue of being a railroad. They even went so far as to petition the STB that NJ Seashore Line should be compelled to transload sand being shipped from Woodmansie at their Jersey City Facility and therefor they had to be given the right to use the property.

How does all this compare/contrast to the Dunellen tract? I am not a lawyer - I think you are? - and I know this is not an official legal opinion.

To what end would these guys reach with all of this frivilous legal stuff? Is it anything more than some kind of tax dodge?

Next they'll claim American Indian heritage and try to grab some land for free. Condemn and steal enough land for a right-of-way to build a rail line to a new casino.

Perhaps were they to suceed they would be in a postion to legally extort money from the current owner to buy them out to be able to resume use of the property. E.g., the hotel needing the parking lot, etc.
