What was the purpose of the short two-story section at the front of the engine house? There is also a ladder up the front with a platform under the window. Was that a fire escape?

Was it always corrugated metal sheeting or is that over brick or block?

Thanks,

Charles

Total guess on my part but perhaps an office for the enginehouse? That may have required the fire escape. Any staircase inside must have been very tight.

The "Enginehouse" was originally the passenger car shop, I've heard employees call it the "Pullman Shop". I was never in it, but wouldn't be surprised if the end had a hoist/crane to lift the end of a car off the truck to work on it.
