The Sunset Lake footbridge, a longtime Emory Street shortcut across the lake, has been reopened June 23 after repairs. The bridge suffered damages from Superstorm Sandy and funds weren't available to rebuilt the span. It was finally rebuilt and reopened.
The bridge was built in 1887-88 in time for the opening of the Inner Belt streetcar system. The trolley line was shut down and removed in 1927, and the bridge was given to Asbury Park rather than tear it down.
Except for being closed after storm damage, the bridge has served as a foot bridge for 90 years.
Other artifacts still exist of the streetcar systems. Along Main Street in Asbury, Bradley Beach, and Belmar, metal "telephone poles" exist that once supported the overhead wiring that powered the trolleys. Once painted green, they are rusty now but still do their jobs holding up electric and telephone wires.
