I am an active railfan, and i frequently photograff pictures... what i am wondering is if anyone is aware of extremely chill freight yards in the southern region of nj.... i have a girlfriend whom of which lives in jackson new jersey, and i would be very considerate to those who could help me. what i am specifically looking for, is as many freight train yards in Southern NJ as possible. prefferably extremely chill ones, because ive been bothered by the rail police many a times. if anyone knows of any yards, or even tropicana layups, i would be more then happy! please leave some information of what town, and directions, or email me...

[email protected] thank you... these pictures will be in a photography portfolio for college, so much help is appreciated

Tropicana trains don't operate in South Jersey.

I realize that some people in North Jersey believe that S.J. starts in New Brunswick, but people in Salem think Trenton is North Jersey.

The South Jersey yard that I'm somewhat familiar with is the former PRR Pavonia yard in Camden. Tresspassing is discouraged. Depending on how many freight cars block the view, sometimes good viewing opportunities are available from the River Line, riding back and forth between Walter Rand and 36th Street.

These shots of Pavonia were taken from the River Line:

This one at the north end of Pavonia Yard was taken from the 36th Street station before the River Line opened for business.

I'll agree with Bob's recommendation of Pavonia...I'd suggest you go to the 36th Street Light Rail station...best spot to view the yard action these days...

Also, there's the yard at Paulsboro...you can sit at several locations on public property and watch...the yard locomotives are usually on the staging track right next to the yard office on Jefferson Street...several locals work out of this yard per day, if you're looking to see some action I'd suggest you go there between 8AM and 2:00PM...PA-10 will be working around on weekdays until about 10 or 11AM...CA-11 will show up northbound from Deepwater around 11:30 or 12:00...they'll make their pickup and head north. PA-21 will leave the yard for Pedricktown and / or Deepwater around 2:00PM...if you go there around 4:00 or 5:00PM, there will be no local power at the yard because both sets will be out working (one on PA-21 and the other on PA-40 to Swedesboro)...

Be sure to make sure you're parked on public property and not tresspassing...they'll come after you here if you go walking down the main or something since the yard office is literally right there...most of these guys are nice down there anyway, I've never been bothered at that yard in all the years I've been railfanning down there...

Take care.

Check out this link: http://www.geocities.com/transit383/yards.html

It is a listing of all the railroad freight yards in the state of New Jersey. I haven't updated the all the trains serving the yards yet, but it should give you a good idea of how much service each yard has.
