I lived in Neptune City, a whole six blocks from the Bradley Beach / Neptune yard, so I was a regular visitor.

As I heard it, the draw over the Manasquan River was under repair and the regular passenger service temporarily ended at Manasquan. As a result, there was nowhere to turn the engine or train, so that was why the loco was backed down to Bradley. And that yard was the last yard on the NY&LB (not counting the then-inaccessible Bay Head yard).

The whistle / horn exchanges were a regular thing and I could hear them from my front porch. Nice.
