The following is from the New Jersey Archaeological Society Yahoo list:

The Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA), using federal funds provided by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), is proposing to rehabilitate and upgrade the infrastructure of the Port Authority Transit Corporation’s (PATCO) Lindenwold Yard in the Borough of Lindenwold and Borough of Somerdale, Camden County, New Jersey. The project includes work on some or all of the following: roadbed, ballast, track, turnouts, third rail traction power supply, lighting, electrical systems, and buildings. The purpose of the project is to render the facility into a state of good repair while improving both flexibility and reliability of rail service.

In advance of the proposed improvements, Richard Grubb & Associates, Inc. is preparing a cultural resources investigation to identify significant cultural resources in the vicinity of the proposed improvements to comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Section 106 requires federally funded projects to take into account the potential project effects to significant historic and/or prehistoric resources. Section 106 entitles parties with a demonstrated interest in history or historic preservation to review, provide comments, and suggest mitigation measures, if necessary, for the project.

Preliminary research indicates that the proposed undertaking is located in or adjacent to one previously identified historic property and one archaeological site: the National Register-eligible Camden and Atlantic Railroad Historic District (SHPO Opinion: 9/17/2001) and Kirkwood Lake Site (28-Ca-67).
