The condition of the cars was very poor at best. The car that fell victim to arson was ruined. As I said before, there are still about six remaining CN coaches in the collection. It is safe to say they are not in danger of extinction.

There are probably another dozen or so coaches of this type or similar remaining elsewhere - saw 2 down at Spencer, NC lettered "Chicago & North Western" of all things, for sale.
They were the last active fleet of heavyweight coaches in "commercial" service in North America so many were saved for preservation. Although well maintained for most of their lives, their last few years saw little work done and they showed their 70 or so years of use. One problem with maintenance is their composite roofs - wood substructure covered with painted canvas - very maintenance intensive. The RMNE is well into the beginning of a roof rehab program that includes removing the old material, repairing or replacing the wooden areas, and applying a rubber-membrane sheet to replace the canvas.

"The RMNE is proud to be the first recipient of the Amherst Railway Society Founders Award for preservation efforts, announced Sunday, January 29, 2012 at the ARS Show in Springfield. The $10,000 award will greatly enhance our efforts to rebuild and restore the engine of Boston & Maine 1732 back into service on our historic railway. RMNE is forever grateful to ARS for their continued support and recognition of those who work to preserve Railroad artifacts for future generations."- Celeste Echlin, RMNE.

It's a great boost to the 1732 effort! She'll be a sweet engine to work with sooner than later!

For the first time in quite a while, the B&M 1732 can be found inside the shop being prepped for its prime mover swap and other associated work. New Haven RS3 529 has also received a lot of attention in preparation for its wheelset/motor combo swaps.

Cool! Thanks for the update. Where did the replacement engine for 1732 come from?

It was an arranged donation. I'll let other folks elaborate on the details!

Diesel engine came from a regional passenger railroad as surplus. It is being rehabbed inside the shop and will probably be ready before the loco is ready for the engine change-out. Loco is getting significant body metal repair and a complete repaint as part of this project. Specific engine-related grant funding from Amherst Railway Society, NRHS and Leigh Webb Memorial (Mass Bay RRE-administered) has been received and is being applied to that part of the work (engine components and parts).

Excellent. It's great that all the pieces of the puzzle are coming together so well.

Saturday saw a nice crowd of folks working on several different projects. RMNE/Naugatuck is definitely moving and shaking!

B&M 1732- Several folks worked on removing the bell bracket located on the short hood to move it to it's as delivered configuration, along with rust busting, body prep, and breaking loose the hardware that holds the long hood down. 1732's new prime mover also saw attention from a couple of workers as well.

Shop- Work continued the process of running electrical services to various areas of the shop, such as the inspection pit.

Shop yard, track 5 (the office track)- Spiking was done on this track's extension south of the shop building.

CNR coach 5805- Work continues.

CNR coach 4992- The roof job nears completion. Upper roof was cleaned off and roofing material staged for final covering. The curved roof corners have come along nicely. This has proven to be quite a learning process.

Work also continued at the Thomaston Station and with the motor vehicle department. The Saybrook Yard work is also progressing.
