There were rumors of some sort of dimensional load coming this Fall, maybe a transformer, so maybe that's why. In all honesty, I am sort of perplexed as everyone else.

MassDOT owns the line? If so they probably have minimum requirements for maintenance?

Attached are what I believe to be the pertinent sections from the 1982 lease. If these are still in force, it appears they have been largely ignored.

That's a nice find, but the Millis line is not part of that 1982 document...BCLR took it over from Conrail around 1987. Not sure if there are any addendums or amendments indicating that the maintenance req's for it are the same as in the original lease.

Brush cutting under-way. They cut ~ 100 yds west of the Island Rd. off loading area. They are now advancing east towards the secondary. As mentioned, the 1701 is parked on the siding under RT. 27 . Should have this completed today. And now we wait for the "Rest of the Story."

Okay, I did some further digging and did not find a specific "Millis" lease. I did find an Assignment Of Transportation Easement And Rights from CSX to BCLR. Doesn't tell us anything about maintenance though.. As always, Clicking image does NOT open file. Use download link at bottom.

Took a swing by Bridge St. in Medfield.
1701 is not in sight, assuming still under the bridge. (What's the best way to access "under the bridge? I coudn't get there without risking very WET feet!)
Yup, the line has been brush-hogged, but not weed-wacked.
Spoke with a construction worker, the current work is only for the hgwy span, "for now."

I can't help but wonder if some of the stick-rail from the Framingham 2'ndary might wind up on this line, who knows?

I don't know how good the view would be but if you can get to the back of 120 North Meadow Road, you might be able to view under the bridge. Just a thought. Were I closer, I'd check it out myself.

Trying to understand why any work would be done if there's no future for the line..

A Facebook post this morning relates again of some sort of transformer move, possible Tresca business and - this is new - car storage.

Am currently out at the Millis line with the Bay Colony Crew operating a Kershaw Brushcutter. Tresca will be receiving cement again on this line, Framingham didnt work out they said. As well as a new customer’s sand hoppers that will likely use the GAF Yard. Overall amazing news for the Millis Line. high quality photos when I get homeImage

Transformer
... Now that has me wondering.. Where in the area would they need one so big that it would need to come in via rail? Nearest utility generation facility/transformer/switching station is in West Medway. There it would seem to me to make more sense to bring it in via CSX/G&U to Bellingham or Milford. This is getting interesting.
