During WW II Camp Miles was home to a battalion of the 52nd Coast Artillery Regiment (Railway). When the 52nd was inactivated and broken up into separate battalions, the one at Miles remained for about another year before it was clear there was no further need of it there. It was sent to Fort Bragg, NC, where it was reorganized and redesignated as a field artillery battalion and subsequently sent to Europe.

I believe I've seen a rail map of tracks within the post but I'll have to do some digging.

The DCL operated a small passenger train, using former Queen Anne RR (dinner train) cars and a big blue (former Conrail) GE unit, from Lewes to Georgetown, DE, in Nov 04, right after the election. With the $2000 insurance cost paid for by means of a charitable donation, a local cat support group chartered the train and, when they weren't able to sell enough tickets to local members of the Red Hat Society to pay for the trip, they opened sales to the general public. The train departed Lewes before it started raining, but by the time it arrived in Georgetown it was coming down in buckets. Most of the scheduled post-election day festivities were canceled. It was a nice, slow ride, but the weather was abysmal.

Unfortunately attempts to interest the DCL in more excursions have been unsuccessful. The railroad has a small staff and displays no interest in either chartered or regular excursion operations. They seem to not know where to begin and have no interest in finding out. Whether or not there will ever be any more rides on this line or any other operated by the DCL is highly questionable.

Hey all, im new to this site but i do have some valuble info for everyone. I have a roster that i have compiled of all the locomotives the DCLR owns. I also have pics of all of them as soon as i get the last batch developed. They own the following.
b23-7 #4024- Currently in Georgetown

b23-7 #4054- Next to the power plant in Indian River. ( i asked a guy working the gravel train that day who owned it and he told me DCLR did. Rumors confirmed they own 2)

44 tonner #44 in Ellendale back on a far siding.

rs-18 #182 In Dagsboro shifting gravel cars

t-6 #19 In georgetown in the shop

rs-1 #23 currently on a siding in the industrial park

gp-9/7 #106 in georgetown sitting in front of the shop, GBRY is still its reporting mark

rs-36 #2 sitting in front of the shop in Georgetown

Plymouth 40 tonner #6 also in the industrial park, she'll never be used again, the trees have grown it in.

They own a total of 9 one of which will never be used i also have some more information on all the locomotives if you'd like it. Again i also have pics of every locomotive the company owns too. If you'd like to see them just let me know. Hope i could help

If you can post pictures of these units, especially the Alco/MLW ones, that would be great. I've been trying in vain for years to catch the T-6, RS-18 or RS-36 crossing the swing-bridge in Lewes with tankcars for Barcroft while on vacation down at the beach in July.

Visited Georgetown on Monday 3 April and have a few additions to AlmostCrazy25’s excellent report:

The T-6 and RS-36 #2 were inside the shop. The RS-36 is due to go off line soon to have wheel work done.

B23-7 #4024 was sitting outside the shop, short hood facing east, which means that the short hood will be facing west when it runs around the train in Lewes and pushes the caboose and cars east over the swing bridge to Barcroft.

The 44-tonner is parked on a siding about a quarter mile north of the crossing in Ellendale. You can’t see it from the highway crossing and may have to hike in to photograph it. (Make sure you obey the 25 mph speed limit in town!)

RS-18 in Dagsboro faces long hood (“F” end) south, but has had its front steps pushed in after being run against a dirt pile!

RS-1 #23, still in primer and with a cracked block, is parked on a wooded siding not far from the Georgetown enginehouse, along with perhaps four of the ex-NH flute-side passenger cars. It didn’t appear very photographable. Some old heavy-weight passenger cars plus several ex-Amtrak cars can also be seen through the trees.

A word of caution: this whole area is within the Georgetown Airport complex, and appears to be patrolled by DE state troopers, so be careful you don’t linger or attract attention to yourself! The DCL people in the engine house area, though, are pretty cool. Incidentally, there’s a small museum on the other side of the airport, open weekends, which hosts several Mig jets, including a Mig-21.

Perhaps the best news about the DCL, though, is that rail service may be returning to the Milton branch, perhaps as early as this fall! An LPG dealer is setting up shop just outside Milford where Route 30 crosses the tracks and wants to use the railroad to receive cars. Needless to say, the tracks will require some work. Up until now, the line has been used only to store empty grain hoppers (the last three were finally hauled out and pushed by crane down to the Ellendale interchange with N-S back in December).

Excellent report on the DCL. You think that the RS-1 is going to get scrapped? Can they get a new 539 (or 244?) for it? I guess those coaches are from the Queen Anne dinner train? Are they for sale, or kept on hand for possible future excursion service? I can't wait to get down to lower Delaware this summer!

Heres those pics i promised you guys. I have all the locomotives that DCLR owns. The one of the T-6 is for you Legio-x. Let me know what you think of them. I also have some local industrial railroad units, along with countless Conrail/NS units. *some of the pics ended up sideways but you can still see them clearly*

Excellent work! The shot of the SD-70 and the RS-18 next to each other is worthy of publication. Keep up the good work.

AlmostCrazy25 -
That T-6 with the caboose is a great grab. The swing bridge parallel to Rt 9 is a great location. Have often hoped to get a pic there. Nicely done.

Hey all, I went through Milton the other day to check out that LPG place and it does look like there is one there. Its less than a 100 yards from route 30 when it crosses the tracks. Theyve already started to put things on the property. Theres already one tank going up and it does look promising in terms of train use. Its right next to the tracks and if you think about it its really not in a good spot unless they expect to recieve rail shipments. I cant wait to see what happens. I really hope they use the old 44 tonner since ive never seen it in action. I also dont know what the status is of the rs-1. I hope they dont scrap it but the last time i looked at it they had removed the bell and put it in the cab. Dont know what it means but hopefully its good. One more thing any info on the use or future of the T-6 #19 would be really great considering its the one i need to photograph the most.

I think the T-6 is a former PRR/PC unit. The T-6 is a rare beast, and a sharp-looking locomotive. It just came became a part of the Alco product line at a bad time, when EMD was marketing the SW-1200 and then the -1500. Keep the updates on this new operation on the Milton branch coming.

I will be vacationing in Cape May, NJ next week and may have an opportunity to take the ferry over to Lewes. Does anyone have any updates to the information posted here recently?

Thanks.
