Every couple of months one of these Santa Fe - looking units comes through Salt Lake on the way to LA, from the Boise builder. The carbody is obviously EMD, but can anyone tell me what kind of diesel engine it has, what its HP is, and the electrical equipment details?

Here is Pacific Harbor Line #73 in Salt Lake on 6/12/2008.

The unit is a MPI MP20C-3. The newest version of this model is powered by a MTU-Detroit Diesel 12V4000 engine rated at 2000 HP. Previous versions had a Cat under the hood.

Saw an article today that said that these PHL units will soon be re-engined with Tier 3 CAT engines. Paid for with gov't $$$, of course. Wonder what they'll do with the MTU-Detroit engines that are only three years old...

(hopefully not destroy them, a la Cash-for-Clunkers...)
