The location of the 20 changed on the RS-1 from a small font low on the cab to a larger font, centered under the window. What year did this change? I think it was fairly early. I'm trying to date some old photos. Thanks.

Interesting!
I never saw that "old" lettering style before..

the "old" also said "Livonia Avon & Lakeville RR"

the "RR" is now gone.

doesnt look like 20 got a full repaint..the yellow stripes appear identical.
(although they could have been painted over in the exact same spot)
but the "Livonia Avon & Lakeville" text and cab number was clearly painted over and re-done...both are different.

The ebay scan is dated 1974. Not sure when the other photos were taken in my collection; mostly a bunch of small prints I've picked up over time at yard sales, etc. I'm thinking when excursion service stopped maybe the RS-1 was touched up.

The #20 retains the LEF&C paint scheme but the #20 was painted out:

Only to be put back in place for the current scheme.

Charles,

I've seen these before and often wondered the same myself. I'd been meaning to ask the one person I was sure would know but time waits for no one. Judging by the fact that the Stillwell coaches were coupled to the 20 at this time it must have been between 1972 when they bought the engine and 1977 when excursions ended. I would assume it was closer to 1972 than it was to '77. I know it is not as specific as one would like and it is an answer, I am not happy with either.

Got a reply from the LA&L (Thanks!). #20 was repainted after #72 was repainted in 77-78.

Also: "The idea behind the small 20 on the cab was that Peter Barry wanted the logo put under the cab window. Peter Barry was the former mayor of Rochester, Navy cmdr, and bank president who was an early LAL officer, director, and investor. That's why the engine bears his name. He also bought it for the LAL in 1972."

Thanks
