TRAIN STAION RECEIVES MONEY

Held hostage for years by the federal government, $640,000 for the revitalization of the historic Erie-Lackawanna Train Station on Second Street has been secured. The announcement came late Friday afternoon from the office of U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York. ''This is a huge victory for the future of the historic Jamestown Train Station,'' Schumer said in a written statement. ''This much-needed project would revitalize the region and reconnect it to its waterfront. I am so glad to help bring these critical funds to the project.''

Schumer's announcement comes in the nick of time - had it not been released, the money was set to expire on Sept. 30, the end of the federal fiscal year. Schumer said it is now ''safe and secure'' in federal Transit Administration control. Mayor Sam Teresi said late Friday that he was ''thankful'' for Schumer's continuing efforts.

''This is great news,'' he said. ''This isn't new funding that has been secured, but it's funding we've been waiting for quite some time. It's now been released and the city can now reimburse itself for costs incurred on the development of the project. This money has come at a good time.'' Teresi said Joe Bellitto, the city comptroller, will be ''very happy'' that the money has been released, since the city has incurred costs related to preliminary planning, engineering and architectural work on the building.
