FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 18, 2007

FALCONER, NY—The Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad (WNYP) has been designated to handle a new coal movement between Emporium, Pennsylvania and Jamestown, New York.

The Jamestown Board of Public Utilities, which operates an electric generating station at Jamestown, has awarded a competitively-bid contract to Allegheny Enterprises of Sterling Run, Pennsylvania to supply 32,000 tons of coal over a one-year period starting in November. The coal will be transported by the Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad (WNYP) at the rate of 6 to 10 cars per week.

"This new rail business demonstrates the advantages of WNYP's recent lease of the Buffalo Line," said William D Burt, president. "The Southern Tier gets lower costs for generating electricity. The Northern Tier gets new outlets for its products."

The line, which extends from Machias, New York through Olean and Emporium to Driftwood, Pennsylvania, was leased to WNYP by the Norfolk Southern Railway on August 3.

"Combining the Buffalo Line with WNYP's existing East-West main line allowed us to make Olean Yard into a hub," Burt explained. "The result is efficient rail transportation that makes our region's industrial employers more competitive, preserving jobs and tax base. This new coal traffic will be handled by our Driftwood trains to Olean, then be transferred to our Olean-Meadville trains for movement to Jamestown, where our Falconer-based crew will spot the cars."

Allegheny Enterprises had previously bid on the Jamestown BPU business but found that trucking costs posed a formidable obstacle, according to WNYP Marketing & Sales Vice President Daniel E Eagan. "We are excited to partner with Allegheny Enterprises to open new markets for them while offering the Jamestown BPU a new source of competitively priced low-sulfur, high-BTU coal."

Eagan noted that WNYP and Allegheny Enterprises are exploring other potential markets, including some that reach beyond WNYP to include destinations on connecting Norfolk Southern lines. Allegheny has both low and high sulfur coal. The latter is often used by power plants equipped with scrubbers.

Burt noted that the first contact with Allegheny Enterprises was made by a new WNYP employee, track supervisor Howard Uber of Emporium. "I appreciate Howard's taking the initiative," said Burt, "and he will be seeing some evidence of that shortly,"

This is an exciting development. I hope it turns out well for all involved. The truth of the matter is, it's not locomotives alone that make a railroad successful, those locomotive must have cars to pull and deliver. :)

A great job in showing a potential customer the benefits. Congrats to Howard Uber and Dan Eagan for their closing a great deal for all involved. Because, "no wheels turn, until the customer says, 'yes.'"
