Very curious about VIA F40's cab layout. I run CP Rail SD40's often on run throughs and i love all the extra features the Canadians use for dealing with harsh winters. Winterization hatches, fuel heaters, double insulated side windows, etc. But i have yet to see the inside of the VIA F40's and if they too have any specialized equipment. Also curious to see if they use a desk on the Conductors side as well. Anyody have any pics or know where to find them?

Here's another shot, where you can see the control desk better.

Another note on VIA's cab layout...

When VIA ordered their F40PH-2's, starting in the mid 1980's, it was around the same time CN was ordering their SD50F's, which would precede the SD60F's.

The SD50F locos, unlike previous CN locos, were equipped with new Desktop control stands. VIA's F40's, following CN's lead, and what they thought was an advanced design, had their F40's equipped with the same desktop controls. When Amtrak ordered their F40's, it was in the late 1970s, and these desktop designs were not yet available.

Interestingly enough, as witnessed with the new deliveries of SD70ACe/M-2 and ES44DC/AC locos, the popular shift is now back to the old traditional style control stands, albeit updated with modern controls/displays and computer tech.

One more thing...

Just thought I'd throw in a couple more VIA F40PH-2 can shots, for the heck of it.
