It looks like that SD40-2 was painted with "engine-room green".

Lime green doesn't belong on a locomotive. Whoever painted it must have been quite high! :-D

I do believe that the KCC GP39-2 shown in the slides you referred to has been converted into a standard GP39-2. KCC793 became Soo 4598 and KCC794 became Soo 4599.

I also must add the Santa Fe CF-7 to the list. What an ugly locomotive. :-D

Also the GP30. Ugh! Sure it may have looked good in its time, but in 2005 it looks butt ugly to me! :-D

I dunno, I like both the CF-7 and the GP-30. The CF-7 is fairly decent for a homebuilt locomotive (SF Clarebourn shops)... it's a bit gangly, but that's what makes it so endearing. As for the GP-30, that "hunchback" gives it a distinct look that sets it apart from the GP-38/40/50 (which more or less look the same). But I'm a fan of the unique, oddball (macabre?) stuff anyway.

You're right! But Soo GP39-2 4599 is a rebuild of once-ugly KCC 794.

My nomination for dieseldom's "Rolling Mud Fence"* would be the Baldwin "babyface" cab unit.

Highest praise?.....the EMD SD9!

My vote for the ugliest diesle would be SCL's BQ23-7. Second would be the "Crandall Cab" rebuilds, and then the Genesis diesels. BTW, the C39-8E's were "Enhanced" units with squared off cabs similar to the C40-8's. The "humpbacks" referred to were the original C39-8's built for NS and Conrail.
