I was reading about the dangers of forward-cab operation in the SEPTA forum regarding a crossing collision with a tanker truck which proved to be fatal to the engineer. I recalled viewing a New Haven RDC in the old Dover Street Yard of the New Haven in which it appeared that the cab suffered similiar damage. Here it is here. If anyone knows the story behind this collision, I would be interested to know it. I believe that it's RDC #29. The photo was taken in 1965.

In 1966, I had occasion to visit the scene of a New Haven wreck in West Roxbury, near where I lived. A MU'd RDC train on the Needham Branch was headed inbound at speed when it suddenly went off towards a siding on a switch near Gardner Street. It was believed that local kids had thrown the switch as a prank. The speed of the train was too fast to take the curve and all cars derailed with at least one car overturning.
