Two-hour train ride between Canberra and Sydney-Talgo

Canberrans could be nipping up to Sydney in just two hours if a new high speed railway project gets the green light.

Executives from Spanish train-building company Talgo arrived in Canberra on Wednesday to discuss running their high speed passenger trains between the two cities.

Must say this stretch of track is not that interesting , so speeding it up is a major benefit.

I think a good state of the track would be essential, as faster trains are more vulnerable than the existing stock. Also, can the line be electrified? Shorter journey times would increase the number of passengers. How often should the service run? One should take into account the number of air passengers and aim to replace air travel by the train.

The point seems to be that they are tilting trains, and that is how they manage to run much faster on existing track. Also, the article states that the existing track has been inspected by Talgo and seems to be OK:

"We have looked at the current track between Sydney and Canberra and it was not as bad as we thought. There is no problem running our trains on the existing railway tracks. For us, this is one of the main reasons to put in our train set. Because we don't need to invest as much on the tracks."

The article doesn't seem to state whether the trains will be diesel or electric, but since the selling point seems to be that little needs to be invested in infrastructure, one assumes that they are diesel, as installing the overhead kit would be expensive.
