Stupid question here but what happens to all the old railroad ties? I see them pilled next to tracks all over the place and wonder who has to clean them up? I could use a few in my yard but have no idea who to contact.

Railroads sell them to wholesale buyers and in turn they sell them to you. They don't sell to anyone else, really.

Well, most railroad companies put these services out to bid, and the winning company comes in and gathers up all of the pulled-out ties, and sorts them into reusable and scrap.

The reusable ties are stacked and hauled off for sale to companies for resale to consumer landscapers, and to large-scale land development/landscaping firms for their use.

The scrap ties are disposed of in accordance with pertinent requirements.

There is a company (in Canada, I think) that burns them to create electricity.
