On Friday, June 23, 2006, the National Museum of Industrial History (NMIH)
will host a rare tour and photography session within the former Bethlehem
Steel mill in Bethlehem, PA. The day long event will take participants on a
walking tour of the mill to see the historic railroad equipment positioned
beneath the blast furnaces. Thanks to the help of Lehigh Valley Rail
Management, several locomotives will be posed throughout the plant for
photographers. Their locomotive repair shop will also be open for touring.
Built for the Bethlehem Steel subsidiary Philadelphia, Bethlehem, and New
England Railroad, the shops are still in operation to this day.

During the course of the event rail equipment in four gauges (3
foot gauge, 3 foot 6 inch gauge, standard gauge, and 7 foot 10.5 inch broad
gauge) will be seen. Ranging from solitary four-wheel transfer cars to a
fleet of eight-axle hot-metal cars, there is a variety of rail vehicles to
be seen in their original surroundings.

Following a dinner break and optional tours of non-railroad related steel
mill equipment, there will be a night photo session featuring the posed
locomotives.

Funds raised during the event will be used by NMIH for the preservation of
the former Pennsylvania Railroad shunt engine (pusher arm locomotive) now in
storage inside the steel mill. The event will be the first public viewing
of the locomotive since it was moved to Bethlehem last summer.

The daytime photo session will start at 10:00 AM and cost $20.
The night photo session, which will meet at 8:30 PM, can be attended
separately and will cost $10. Both sessions together are $25. The event is
limited to forty people and will proceed rain or shine. To reserve a spot,
please send an e-mail to [email protected] Register early to avoid
disappointment, since this is a first-come, first-served basis. Admission
must be paid on the day of the tour (Friday, June 23rd) by CHECK ONLY to the
"National Museum of Industrial History."

Rules and Regulations:

1. All tour participants MUST wear closed toed shoes and long pants.

2. Hard Hats will be supplied and must be worn when instructed.

3. Children under age 12 are NOT permitted. Anyone under age 18 must be

4. NMIH may alter itinerary if conditions warrant.

5. No smoking permitted.

6. Participants must stay with group at all times.

7. A tripod and camera capable of long-term exposures are required for those

Looks like the rain held off for you.

My father and I were on the tour and decided to bail on the night session, for fear of rain. Legs we hurting from all the walking too.

Overall a very great tour, wish it hadn't been so hot, and I wish we could have seen the inside of the locomotive shop. (Some type of accident prevented that part of the tour) But that gives me a reason to come back for another look around.

I would STRONGLY suggest that if this tour is offered again, do not wait to reserve a spot. It is a must see for any railroad buff!
