Downtown Rochester, a few blocks south of the station, isnt the problem..
no one lives there.

the problem is the vast expanse of urban neighborhood immediately North of the station.

At 2am, I would feel perfectly safe walking south.
I would not walk north.

You got it Scotty, I was going to mention "NOT" going through the underpass to the Northside of the tracks. Altho wandering around any urban location late at night alone is foolish. Downtown to the south and west of the station along the river is reasonably safe, and a number of entertainment and dinning venues. Not to mention the High Falls district, across the river to the west and to the Northside of the tracks.

Finally, the correct answer! A few blocks north is definitely the wrong side of the tracks. A few blocks east can be "interesting", too. South or west is OK. because it's mostly businesses.
