Hi,

Does anyone know the road number of the wood, cupola, CNJ caboose along the Blackwood Lake Trail, Blackwood, NJ?

This caboose may have come to Blackwood from Florence, NJ.

Thanks, Roger, whoi came from Oak Tree, NJ

Hi Roger,
I live near the caboose. To the best of my knowledge this caboose was purchased from the railroad in 1973 by Gordon Compton. Mr. Compton operated a restaurant and installed the caboose adjacent to the restaurant. All the interior was removed and tables installed so patrons could eat in it. I saw some 8mm movies that were taken when Mr. Compton bought the caboose. The number that was on it appeared to be 91345. The restaurant was sold and the new owner wanted to expand the building were the caboose was. He donated to caboose and it was moved to it's present location.
I hope this information is helpful.

91345 would be in the correct numbering series for a wood CNJ class NEa caboose. They were all retired in 1972, and a few sold in 72-73. Arch bar trucks and friction journals were outlawed in 1972 for interstate service, and the CNJ retired the old wood cabooses with the naughty trucks and journals.
