A rare diesel locomotive destined for demolition in California has found refuge in Berks County, thanks to a joint preservation effort by railroad executives, the government and Reading Railroad historians.
An EMD SW1200 locomotive, one of five made for the Reading Railroad in 1963, has become the newest member of the collection at the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum in Hamburg.
The 1,200 horsepower engine completed a cross-country journey from California, where it had been part of the Stockton Terminal and Eastern Railroad, or STE.
OmniTRAX, and STE affiliate, donated the 57-year-old engine to the heritage center.
