While it was still operating I visited the railway on an open day, when I think there was no mail using it.

It seemed quite interesting.

I wish a new use could be found for it, perhaps by extending it to such places as the mail depot on the proper size railway - but privatisation has removed the planning function of BR which could have handled it.

And hasn't the Royal Mail also been privatised, thus increasing the fragmentation and lack of coherence?

But I think one also has to factor in the general decrease in real mail due mainly to the internet and social media, and also to private courier services - ironically parcels are increasing due to internet shopping, but few are delivered by the Royal Mail.

While there are still a few mail movements by train, there is nothing like the mail trains that used to run all over the network. Mail sorting is now confined to a reduced number of regional sorting offices and there are far fewer mail depots, whether road or rail. A different world.
