4409 was becoming a shop queen again for a while. She had been stuck back onto the Hudson Protect gear for a period.

Also, your Raritan sets last night:
  • 4114 / 6 / 6030
    4116 / 6 / 6031
    4120 / 6 / 6043
    4124 / 6 / 5027
    4125 / 6 / 6016
    4141 / 6 / 6024
    4150 / 6 / 6015
    4212 / 7 / 5020

What constitutes a locomotive to be a "she"?

I assume that should be a 5 between the locomotive and cab? There is usually only one seven car set on the line, while the rest have six cars.

Last I saw, the "4212 / 6 / 5020" was actually 7 cars, not 6.

Correction noted Marty. It was another one of those brain fart nights.

Transit383: The count includes the cab car. The cab number is listed after so everyone knows what cab is on it.

Scott: It goes back to olden days. Railroading has perdominately been a male profession, hence the feminization of affectionate terms for equipment and the like. Same as with sailing and aviation.

And here are tonight's sightings. The one particular, I owe a favor to someone for giving me heads up that it was sent over to Raritan for use beginning today.

*NJTR4024 / 6 Cars / NJTR6040*
NJTR4116 / 6 Cars / NJTR6031
NJTR4125 / 6 Cars / NJTR6016
NJTR4141 / 6 Cars / NJTR6024
NJTR4302 / 3 Cars / NJTR5031 (Shop Move To Raritan)

I read that a man was killed by a train in Cranford. They said he was walking on the tracks. Anyone hear anything else? Was he railfanning?

Yea, that was the other night - Thursday maybe?

So the PL42's are gonna be tried out in Raritan - what I wouldn't give to be a fly on those walls when the ol timers sign up Tuesday morning!!!

"Whats an ALP46 doing out in Raritan?" hhahahahaha

Wasn't being used though. It was only signed up for passenger service today on the RVL was what I was told. I kind of thought she was kidding me when she called and said it wasn't a test, but I took her word for it. And just to aid your fly on the wall fantasy Jtgshu, Moderator O'Sullivan would zap me if I repeated some of the comments that flew over the radio today. Tuesday will definately require a full day at The Park.

Nah, I was referring to the fatality on Thursday (or whenever) not the PL42, sorry for any confusion

Roger man. Still second your fly on the wall comment. There are going to be some words flying in the office, and during rush hour on 50/50.

Hahaha. Yeah, I'd have to make sure we have clean discourse here (for the most part.) Incidentally, I would leave to hear the radio reactions to the new loco on the line. Hehehe.

I find it a bit odd that NJT decided to start the PL42s in the middle of winter on the RVL. The reason I say this is because over the past few years, there have been a few RVL trainsets in the winter months that have run with a locomotive on each end (no cab cars in use), presumably for extra traction in snow and ice. Now they decide to put a PL42 out there solo?

Wouldn't the Bay Head Shuttle be a better place to start the PL42s on the Newark Division?

In any case, I'd really like to get some photos of these locomotives on the western end of the RVL (Annandale and High Bridge, specifically).

Here are some photos of a PL42AC Test train I saw on the Rartian Valley Line in Hillside NJ during the summer of 2005 in August.

Tell me what you think. It was a BIG SURPRISE to see these locomotives on the RVL when I did.

I don't do up to the RVL very often. I normally take photos in Hillside NJ as my father is the fire chief of the fire department.
