anyone remember this puppy?
built in Romania in 1974, considered to be "Russian"..
it was a strange foreign visitor sitting dead in the former LVRR yard in Sayre, PA during the mid-80's.
I dont know exactly when it arrived in Sayre, but it was there in 1984, when this photo was taken.
it was scrapped right there in '86 or '87.
(I have lots more photos of it Sayre, plus photos of it in pieces as it was being cut up.
I can post more if anyone is interested.)

here is everything I could find on-line about it:

when it finished its tour it was purchased by Washington Terminal Co.

the Quarter Horse, built by Faur in Romania in 1974
Diesel/hydralic 1250 hp 43ft 8in

it became Washington Terminal 78 in 1978

I have not seen it lately so I have no idea if it is still in service.

That was the FAUR "Quarter Horse." Despite the name, it did have slightly more than 0.25 hp
...but not much. Santa Fe tried it too, but decided it was too light-duty for them
(it was about 1200 hp, same as the MK1200G's Santa Fe now says are too light-duty for them.)
The prototype ultimately ended up on Washington Terminal. I remember reading that it was sold some time ago,
but I don't recall what happened to it (glue factory, maybe?)

I have a slide of this beast working for Washington Terminal.
The WT crews hated this engine as it had no weight and therefore could not pull much.

The Alco RS-1's were liked the best. :D

I always thought a quarter horse was the coin-operated ride in front of the K-mart.

It also demonstrated on the Milwaukee Road near Bensenville in the 70s.

At one point, it ended up in Sayre,PA at the old LV shops to be used by a freight car repair company.
I am sure it is scrapped now. :-D

Did they remove the huge, "English" style buffer heads?
