It's a very interesting well researched document outlining the LIRR project(s) history. A long item check it out, comments? Disclaimer: It's a 93 page .pdf with plenty of maps, info and history and not a causal read! :-)

Steve - I downloaded and read through the Rauch Foundation "Breaking Through" history of the
Main Line Third Track Project(s) over the years to implement the needed third track - and eliminate
the dangerous problem grade crossings on what would eventually be a 10.1 mile stretch...

This overview gives an idea on the strong lineside NIMBY opposition that the project had to overcome
for this improvement to eventually become reality benefitting ALL of Long Island in the long run...
The LIRR history aspect alone makes this appropriate for the LIRR Forum...A good read...MACTRAXX
