A major cut to VIA services occurred in November 1981. Here's the last run of the westbound Atlantic at Truro Nova Scotia on November 14, 1981. Later that evening the Atlantic would cross through the USA on it's way between Halifax, Saint John and Montreal.

VIA's Atlantic was the last passenger train serving the State of Maine at that time**. The Atlantic was restored in June 1985......then lasted 'till Dec 1994 when it was discontinued for the second time with the proposed abandonment of the CPR across Maine. (**Amtrak eventually began service to Maine with the Downeaster in Dec. 2001)
