The best bet to see how rails related to structures and the city streets, is to visit the central library and go to the research/reference department. Ask if they hae any Sanborn fire insurance maps from after the 1930s (or else you wont see the station on it). The city may have its own maps of the area, too. Topo maps wont really give you the whole story you're looking for. If you start your search at the library, their staff will be able to help you find exactly what you're looking for.

You know something that strikes me a bit odd? There have been half a dozen --- or nearly so ---- color photo books on NYC in the past few years. Some are by Dave Sweetland, one by Geoff Doughty, etc. Not a single one has a single photo of the downtown Syracuse station in service!

Well, perhaps somebody has a photo collection lurking out there and will work with Morning Sun to author a theoretical "Trackside Syracuse" along the lines of the excellent "Trackside Albany Gateway."

Try to find the book titled: Railroads in the Streets of Syracuse. It was published by the Central New York Chapter of the NRHS. It covers all the railroads that went through Syracuse with photos of the old downtown stations. I picked up a copy off of ebay several months ago brand new. Good luck!
