I know that one of the SW1s had MU added at some point. Which one was it, and why? Wasn't it something on the Conn. River?

B&M 1127 was the only SW-1 with MU. The MU was added by the Concord NH shops.
It was sold to the Luzerne and Susquehanna and became their #30. It was renumbered
to #600 at some point.

This photo shows it as #30 in 2007. MU receptable clearly visible right of center:

Here it is still going strong in 2013 as #600. Unknown if it was MU'ed with the
SW7 behind it.

I know the Concord-Lincoln application was the Franklin & Tilton branch. Was the Conn River application Springfield Terminal, or the Northampton - Wheelwright remnant of the Central Mass.?

I'm not sure what the 1127 did on the Conn River that required MUing it with road power... maybe the airport branch at Chicopee or some of the mill track in Holyoke? The last time I caught it running, in 1984, it was working solo on the local freight south out of East Deerfield.

By the time the original Springfield Terminal's 44-Tonner #1 was retired, pre-Guilford, the only remaining customer on the line was the lumberyard at the junction in Charlestown and weight restrictions weren't an issue since nothing except highway traffic crossed the Connecticut River road/rail bridge anymore. The weekly local Wheelwright remnant of the Central Mass was handled up to the end by a switcher based at east end, not by road power.

Tom:

I remember it being used on E-6 with a road engine. They would do the
work along the main, when they got to Mt.Tom, the sw1 would take
cars up the E.Hampden branch, The road power would sit at Mt.Tom
(I have pictures some where)

Right... I forgot about the Easthampton branch. Checking a 1963 employee timetable now I see that it was restricted to switcher-size power.

Was the 1127 called jingles by the engine crew, because it rattled

so much when it was running? Kind of remembering my father calling

one of the 1100's jingles, he had the 1127 on the Keene branch as a regular engine for while,if I remember correctly.

Probably was as I've been told by a friend who's an engineer on the L&S that they have MU'd it on a regular basis with either one of the other switchers to move cuts of ethanol up to the facility in Avoca, PA, which requires moving up a switch-back with stiff grades. Never been lucky to catch those moves but I'm sure they put on quite a show...
