subway tunnels in clifton

this is rather weird, but i heard from a friend that there are subway tunnels in clifton somewhere. supposedly there was going to subway that would go from newark and end in clifton (i guess going thru belleville and bloomfield).

does anyone know if this is tru or just a local legend?

Well, there is a storm drain system apparently labeled the 'Gates of Hell' by the Clifton area locals - not sure if this is what you heard?

I believe there was a tunnel used to supply water for the Morris Canal in the section near Broad Street in Clifton. The description in wierd NJ is consistent with a feeder tunnel.

Canal was out of business by 1925.

I believe there were several underground tunnels in the Botany Village complex, using water backed up by Dundee dam
