Back Story: Restoring historic stretch of railroad
Steam Into History opens segment in York County
By Frederick N. Rasmussen, The Baltimore Sun

For quite some time now, enthusiastic volunteers have been whacking brush, clearing debris and replacing ties and rails on the old Pennsylvania Railroad's Northern Central Division, one of the nation's most historic stretches of railroad, which courses 10 miles northward from New Freedom, Pa., to Hanover Junction.

This work has been done under the guidance of Steam Into History Inc., a nonprofit that has returned the sights and sounds of steam railroading to York County just in time to observe the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.

This is a first class operation. A friend and I stopped by there on Sat. and watched the train run. We were not aware of this operation, until one of the volunteers at the Stewartstown Railroad ,told us about it when we were in Stewartstown on Fri evening.
They have a "Brand New", recently built, replica of an 1860's era steam engine, and 2 passenger cars. New passenger cars that are time period correct, are also under construction. The engine burns oil. The train looked nearly sold out to me, as both cars were pretty full.
The track has been totally rebuilt with thousands of new ties and new ballast the whole length of the run.
The stanby power is provided by the GE 44 tonner from the Stewartstown RR. It was loaded on a truck and hauled to New Freedom, due to washouts on the Stewartstown.
If anyone is in the area, it is a place you should check out.
