hi again, i was on YOU-TUBE again and typed in "starting locomotives" and there was a consist of about 4-5 UP engines not sure, anyway the footage was taken from the cab window of an SD70? (because of that ridge that jutts out just under the cab windows on late model EMDs)and it was being cranked over by the engineer but there was about a 14 second delay with a loud beeping alarm then a hiss and finally it started, is this the norm on late model power when starting the engine?are GE the same?, thanks again, :-D dash7

The delay is because of the fuel prime cycle and engine purge. As for the hissing, many of the new loco's have an air starter which sounds like an impact gun

GE's dont use starters, the main generator is simply reversed (it becomes a motor). They have a delay to start because of the fuel prime cycle and to give a chance for the field to wind up on the generator.

thanks NV290, i guess that would explain the delay before starting and the warning buzzers which at least lets you know whats happening!(probably to avoid engineers getting coronnaries!)thanks, dash7
