One other issue that came up, Noel Weaver mentioned Boston-Pittsburgh through sleeper service via the New Haven and (I presume) the Pennsylvania Railroad.
The New York Central System had their own -- single-line !!! -- sleeper service between the Hub and Steeltown.
In the April 1950 system folder the westbound sleeper (a 10 roomette / 5 double bedroom car) departed Boston in No. 97 the Paul Revere at 3:05 PM arriving in Pittsburgh the next morning at 7:15 AM, a 16 hour 10 minute ride.
Eastbound the Boston sleeper departed Pittsburgh at 4:00 PM in P&LE No. 33 and arrived in Boston the next morning at 9:05 AM in No. 46 the Interstate Express, a trip time of 17 hours and 5 minutes.
There's no mileage shown but I would guesstimate it at about 750 miles.
