Railway Gazette International wrote:Having been supplying engines and other assemblies to the locomotive industry since 1937, Cummins has also opted for SCR to reach the Tier 4 emissions standards. In recent years it has shipped prime movers to Brookville Equipment Corp, Siemens, National Railway Equipment and Motive Power. Several of its engines, including the 2700 hp QSK60 and the 4400 hp QSK95, have been successfully tested to meet the Tier 4 standards.
Launched in 2011 (RG 12.11 p51), the QSK95 is to be installed in Siemens’ Charger locomotives on order for state-funded Amtrak services in Illinois and California plus the All Aboard Florida inter-city service between Miami and Orlando (RG 10.15 p31). The first engine deliveries to the Siemens assembly plant in Sacramento began in September.
To test the 16-cylinder QSK95, Cummins and its subcontractors have built a technology demonstrator using the core of a former Union Pacific SD90MAC. Numbered CECX 1919, this will be starting a planned two-year trial on the nearby Indiana Rail Road in January 2016.
‘We designed this locomotive to be a versatile rolling laboratory with various subsystem redundancies to be able to test various passenger and freight configurations’, explains Market Development Leader Randy Nelson. ‘The Indiana Rail Road is running a fleet of SD90s. It’s important to us that they are familiar with the same locomotive that we’ve repowered. Initially it will be running on their coal trains from southwestern Indiana to Indianapolis.’ The engine will be equipped with GPS and engine telemetry so that Cummins can track its location and performance.
‘We haven’t burdened the base engine with EGR emissions hardware’, explains Nelson. ‘In doing so, we maintain excellent fuel economy, engine durability and reliability. We’re expecting the QSK95 to carry the Cummins high horsepower business into the extended future.’
