Most of the time when I visit Goodman St. yard in Rochester, NY its a weekend and there isnt much going on..the small herd of CSX GP38-2's and GP40-2's, which are the power for switching and locals, are sitting at the terminal, a few run-through freights will roll through..but generally not a lot going on...I almost NEVER get to visit the yard in the middle of a weekday! (because of that pesky necessity called "a job")
Well Wednesday morning I had the opportunity to be driving around, and I stopped by Goodman St...wow! so much going on!
a fresh
Dansville rebuildis here, part of a trio of SD40-2's in three different paintschemes, Three different Rochester & Southern units are around, all doing different things, 2 cabooses, the new
Genset unit, the GP38-2 switchers, and a few road freights rolling through! very busy!
One unfortunate thing about Goodman Street yard is that the only place to do your railfanning is the NORTH side of the yard..its great for watching the trains! but really bad for lighting...no matter what, the sun is almost always in front of you..especially mid-day..so the contrast is a bit severe on these pics, but oh well..
Here is 15 minutes in the life of Goodman St yard, approx 10:00 - 10:15 AM, Wednesday May 30, 2007.
As I pulled up to the yard, a trio of classic SD40-2's is switching around some cars.
Fresh from AMP in Dansville is CEFX 3188, just handed off to CSX from R&S, and ready to get back to work.
Rochester & Southern (B&P) GP40 3000 is in some trouble..her rear truck is off the rails.
Another R&S (B&P) GP40 sits nearby..this unit looks like it might be heading out from Rochester for a bit..perhaps for repairs or maybe sold?
unknown at this time.
(3106 is an original New York Central unit! she probably passed right through here hauling mainline road freights back in her NYC days..)
Two cabooses are here..they are still occasonally used on locals.
and there is the new Genset hiding in the background!
3106 shows off her KYLE railroad logo, a holdover from a previous life.
I took a walk up to the Main Street bridge, R&S (G&W) MP15DC 46 waits to enter the yard.
A few minutes later, she heads in..
and finally, a good look at the new Genset!
no one was with it, and it didnt move while I was there,
so I didnt get to see or hear it operate..
Thats it for the tour..
thanks!
