Hello all,

I am lucky enough to have a fellow railfan as a college professor and he has allowed me to pursue the evolution of diesel locomotives as a term paper topic. Problem is, there is not a lot of mainstream information on this topic. If anyone knows of any good sources (print or web) for information on diesel-mechanical, diesel-electric, diesel-hydraulic, and dual-mode diesels I would really appreciate if you could pass it along.

Thanks a lot.

There are many websites for such things; mine is geared for both those new to the hobby with some introductory articles, and some in-depth articles as well.

http://www.geocities.com/wbd641/locomotives1.html

I discuss both diesel-electric and diesel-hydraulic locomotives there, I'll also note.

You can find useful information here on Don Strack's website about diesel development. See http://utahrails.net/ and have a look around.

For information on the very early diesel locomotives (up to about 1935) get hold of Kirkland's "Dawn of the Diesel Age" It deals mostly with the US but does include some important European developments.
