Re: Finger Lakes Railway (FGLK) Discussion

Now THAT would have been an interesting ride if the line were still there. But cars at Canandaigua are better than none at all
For sure! Railroad East of the plant there's some pretty hefty swampland, I bet the roadbed would be (and likely WAS ) in pretty rough shape!

Commodore would make sense, they have a sizable facility in East Bloomfield thats grown into 2 divisions. Ironically, it is right along the old Peanut Line ROW. Good to see FGLK work with businesses that are off-line as much as those on-line.

Bringing this back to FGLK a bit more, the 5&20 bypass around Canandaigua was built back in the early 80's ( I think? ) to get truck traffic away from downtown Canandaigua, and to avoid the persistent truck constant collisions with the CR/PC/NYC bridge on West Ave. I was quite young back then, b...

As a frequent passenger on the Empire Service from SYR to NYP, I can say they run a pretty tight ship, and it is FAR better than trying to fly from ROC or SYR to LGA or JFK. The track and ride quality on the stretch from ALB down to Hudson is horrible though, usually feels like we're going to fly of...

Nashville & Montpelier picked up in Elmira today by Amtrak 100 & 520.

So back to the production of the new Diners specifically, how many more are yet to be delivered? I would think they'd have a couple more ready to go later this month given the typical pace?

Really hoping for a real dining car in 2 weeks on 48/49. I see the menu hasn't changed on line, but I will remain very cautiously optimistic!

Rumor has it Amtrak is making a pickup at CAF in Elmira Heights today.

Its a one of a kind, one-off, heritage scheme, whatever you want to call it. FGLK doesn't have another boxcar painted like it. For what its worth, Lake City Hobby in Geneva had a special run of those boxcars done by Accurail and the kits are in stock.

The boxcar is a one-off, and as far as I know, it doesn't leave home rails for fear of vandalism. It has been in Geneva for a couple of years now and last week I heard that they had run it out toward Solvay, not sure why its on the move though.

I boarded the LSL/49 last week in Penn Station and across the platform was "Augusta", making the cafe/dining car on our train look disappointing in comparison. I was talking with a porter on our train about the new dining cars, and he said, "we're always the last to get the nice stuff...

A member of another group said yesterday that an Amtrak consist of one car flanked by 2 engines headed south on the former D&H, which would indicate they're coming north today with new diner cars.

I'm on 48/49 the 2nd week of February, not holding out much hope. But taking the whole family to Chicago on 48/49 in April, really would be nice to have the diners running by then!

I take Amtrak Syracuse to Penn every other week, and while I usually take the Empire Service down, the LSL is a great option for the ride home. Theres plenty of people that get on in NYC and off in Syracuse or Rochester, taking advantage of the time for a nap, dinner, and plenty of quiet work time n...

I wonder though how long it will take for it to enter service, as theoretically to run something like the Lake Shore Limited, you'd need two diners minimum, one for each direction. It only makes sense to change the food service program for the route entirely, no?
