Re: RS-1, RS-2, RS-3

Looking at pictures of BNs (4081-4086) ex NP 1955 RS-3 order (857-862 made it to BN), it looks like all were built as or modified while still NP units to operate short hood forward. I think that it would be rather expensive to convert a unit after it was built, so the railroad would have to have a g...

It appears that all the ATSF Alcos including the RS-2 (2099), all the RSD-4s, RSD-5s and RSD-7s were built to operate short hood forward.

The tracks "up the hill" (former Main line to New Sweden and beyond to the north) have been removed, including the former railroad crossing on Limestone Street. The crossing itself (the rails that is) is still there, but the connecting rails from the crossing to the yard area have been rem...

Not just the S12, but the S8 and the RS12 also have this feature. Like the S12, the very earliest of these two models also lack the "grille" in the "grille".

Does number 406 have LED Headlights and Ditchlights ? Those lights sure look different from anything I've seen so far.

I can't say what any current shippers there may be, but this is the former AVR (Aroostook Valley Railroad) trackage that served the former Presque Isle Air Force Base which closed down in the late 1950s or early 1960s. There are several businesses located in former Air Force Hanger buildings, and I ...

It appears that BNSF thinks that the concept is a success. My evidence for this statement is that they are now rebuilding older GEs (C44-9W) in the 600 series into the the same A-1-A AC motored configuration. I think that the real objective is to reduce maintenance costs because AC traction motors d...

I wonder if what he saw could have been one of the Maine Eastern FL-9s. It could have been in transit on its way either to of from Maine.

There were two up here in Aroostook county that I have heard about. The first was during the construction of the "Aroostook Railroad" (became the Bangor and Aroostook) the Maine Central started building the connection to it north from the Danforth area to Houlton. According to what I have ...

Find the Runways. Look to the left (west). There is a road parallel to the runways called Arizona Road. At the north end of this road are two cross roads, Colorado and Georgia. The building is just south of Colorado Road. Find the Water Tower that is North of some buildings. Just to the right (east)...

Is far as I remember, there have been three locomotives on the former Loring AFB., of which I have seen two (both at the same time). At the time, in the late 1960s or early 1970s the "old" (RSD-1) and the "new" (Alco MRS-1) were both there. The RSD-1 apparently had several defect...

Tonight on the local TV News (WAGM) it was announced that the Town of Fort Fairfield has sold the Eight (8) miles of track that they owned, which was purchased from the BAR (I think) at some point in the distant past, has been sold to the State of Maine for continued operation.

It should also be noted that in normal operation all locomotive wheels will slip a certain controlled amount. Since the late 1970s the amount of slippage is controlled by a computerized system. On some of the systems the actual locomotive speed is measured by an onboard radar system and compared wit...
