Thanks, yes, we got word through the City of Cambridge also that it was PTC testing. Lowell to Ayer via Pan Am trackage is a VERY long way around since the Pan Am track is only good for 10mph. And this is interesting...I knew the trip via Ayer was a long distance, but had no idea about the speed lim...

Does anyone know if the Somerville bridge demolition work has caused any overnight Lowell Line equipment moves to be shifted to the Fitchburg Line? My neighbors and I in Cambridge have noticed a fair bit of train activity during the normally quiet 1AM to 5AM period over the past several days, and we...

Sherman Street is no longer a "quiet zone" crossing, hence train legally required to sound horns.. OK, but according to the FRA Inventory History, it *hasn't* been a quiet zone crossing since at least 2002, including at the most recent update in November, 2017. So...why the sudden change?...

[Not strictly a delay related question, but I'm wondering if the change I've noticed is tied to the recent Littleton incident mentioned up-thread. Moderators, feel free to move this elsewhere.] Since returning home from a trip late last week I've noticed the commuter rail traffic on the Fitchburg Li...

Just spotted this crossing Sherman St. in Cambridge...some sort of specialty vehicle, LORAM?

I think I just saw a rescue operation...one of the work locomotives (3247?) headed west at a good clip, and shortly (15-20 minutes) later came back through West Cambridge leading a set of carriages, with locomotive 1033 at the other end.

An interesting review of what must be a very good book of the UK train history, "The Railways: Nation, Network and People" by Simon Bradley. "To enter the railways as a passenger is to hope for a fast, comfortable journey, helped by staff who aren’t oppressed or haughty, leaving and a...

Much less exciting that the new bridge in Concord, but we're getting all new crossing gates and lights on Sherman St. in West Cambridge. They've got LEDs, according to one of the workers I chatted with. I haven't yet heard the bells ringing, so no idea if those are now digital, or if they're stillin...

Just saw SLC 293 heading inbound to Porter Sq. on the Fitchburg line in West Cambridge, powering one of the morning commute trains. Was struck by the engine color at first...thought it might be an Amtrak paint scheme, but I gather there are some leased locomotives running around the system these day...

The Sperry rail car (SRS 125) has gone back and forth a couple of times this morning on the Fitchburg line, in West Cambridge. One of the work locomotives went by on its own, headed west, also. There's been a fair bit of rail and signal work in the area lately...the last time I checked, the new sign...

Here's a video of movement on the Fitchburg line earlier this afternoon , at Sherman St. in Cambridge. The train doesn't show up until after 0m30s, but I left the foolish pedestrian in at the beginning. You might want to mute the volume, as my phone makes a funny high pitched noise (from a gyroscope...

Work just finished for the day in West Cambridge, west of Sherman St. Looks like there's a new grey hut on the north side of the tracks, and there seemed to be something else going on further down the tracks, but my view is blocked. Big piles of sand and gravel still remain on either side of the road.

Does anyone have or know of the final plan for that bridge in Concord? It's needed work since the late 80s; I would imagine that nothing less than "tear it down in sections and rebuild it" is going to suffice. According to the March project update , the Route 62 bridge in Concord will beg...

I don't know if it's going to result in any delays, but a bit of excitement here in West Cambridge, where a school bus ripped the arm off a crossing gate. The Cambridge Fire Dept. has sent two pumpers, and a large group of firemen are standing around looking at the arm in the gutter. There's also a ...
