Re: Cherry Valley Branch questions

Regarding the Cherry Valley Branch crossing Route 20: The highway was rebuilt and widened only about two years before the line was abandoned in 1956. At that time (1956), the bridge you now see crossing Route 20 was built. In other words, the bridge was only two years old when the line was abandoned...

Re: abandoned D & H line south of Albany

As far as I have ever been able to tell, the story of the bridge over the Normankill on the Albany Main was a piece of fiction. O knew D&H officials at the time, and I never heard them say the bridge had been condemned. The problem was that the bridge was a pin-connected through-truss bridge, an...

I also recall this incident involving propane tank cars between Emmons and Colliers. Fortunately (and miraculously), no one was killed. As I recall, a firefighter from Milford lost an arm when a ladder from one of the tank cars hit him during the explosion. One of the tank cars, as I recall, became ...

I humbly disagree with Chief Troll on the identification of the industrial building in the background behind (east of) the Watervliet station. The structure is Building 29, the D&H car shop, at Colonie. The Watervliet Arsenal would be a little further north and further away in the background. Be...

Approximately how many cars were usually on RW-6? 80? More?

Water Tank at Sanitaria Springs

Over the years, while driving on I-88 past Sanitaria Springs (south side of Belden Hill), I have noticed what looks like a large stone base for a water tank/tower on the east side of the D&H right-of-way (ROW). It is located perhaps 1/4-1/2 mile toward Binghamton from the Depot Rd. crossing in S...

D&H Paper Trains

As I recall, ca. 1967 there were two southbound trains each week of newsprint from Canada, and they were referred to as the "paper trains".

Does anyone recall the symbols for these two trains? They were probably "RW" with a number after them.

It has only been 2+ years since there was last a comment on this discussion, so perhaps it's not too late for more comment and questions. I have been having a discussion with a friend about whether the D&H Building in Albany (now the headquarters of the State University of New York) was ever the...

Just read this string (nearly three years after everyon eelse) and wanted to breathe a little more life into it: 1) I believe the New York State Museum has a 16 mm film of that first continuous welded rail installation behind the headquarters building in Albany. I found the film (along with others) ...

Just to clarify points brought up by Bob Sandusky: The Tahawus mine and its output had nothing to do with the NL facility on Central Ave. in the Town of Colonie, just west of the Albany City line (New York Central Mainline). It is my understanding that this facility was originally a brass foundry, a...

Just to clarify a few points: The D&H may have built the rail line between North Creek and Tahwaus, but they built it for the U.S. Government. The Government owned it until some years after it was taken out of service, at which time the General Services Administration (the U.S. agency responsibl...

These were pre-existing D&H boxcars which were refurbished (I'm not sure "rebuilt" would be an accurate term) at the Oneonta car shop in the early 1980's - not sure what year but perhaps around 1982. The purpose of the project was to provide work for the D&H shop employees and keep...
