Re: Amtrak Revenue Trains using tracks 1-4 @ New York Penn Station

The original intent was to have Tracks 1-4 lead into a third East River tube if it became necessary. Somewhere in Chris Baer's chronology on the PRRT&HS website is a memo from around 1937 reporting that a third tube will not be necessary after all; I think Track 1 has the beginning of a slight ...

I saw somewhere that the transition was moved in the early 1990s. Anyone know why the change was made and in what year?

Thanks.

Through routing using the wyes at NS or SS would cause some horrible crossing moves, no? The rationale for suburb-to-suburb through running is not so much that you're just linking suburbs, but that you're doing so while serving the densest (ie core bound) market, and that you're making much better ...

From a planning perspective, it's a really really bad idea to induce people to live that far from jobs. We already have a sprawl issue in this region, despite areas closer to the core being so underdeveloped. Fixing that -- which, of course, requires public transit $$$ -- should be the focus, not t...

Looking back, it would have been nice for the third track to have been extended all the way to North White Plains as that is one of the busiest stretches of the Harlem Line, although trains do turn at Crestwood and other place down the line. I don't think the budget permits for an extension of the ...

Thanks for the research!

They could run via the Morris and Essex Lines, but platforms would have to be converted to high-levels.

S: I will second K&K and mention the LIRR branch timetables began issue with the May 20, 1974 schedule change. I believe both St. Albans and Springfield Gardens (closed 1980; later demolished) were placed in the West Hempstead TT instead of the Babylon Branch was for exposure with the limited s...

I would use this money to rebuild the Republic station. Money for planning and construction was part of the 2015-2019 plan, but the construction was pushed to 2020-2024. That station would actually see traffic. I would also consider adding a stop at Nichols Road for a connection with BRT.

How long are NWP, New Rochelle and Williamsbridge? Thanks for the thorough post.

From west of Harrison through Mamaroneck and Larchmont is a straight stretch of track. Extending Larchmont, if they needed it, would be easy enough. Mamaroneck would be tougher as there are bridges at either end. And the bridge over Mamaroneck Avenue has clearance issues. From a pedestrian access s...

Using the distance feature in Google My Maps, the platforms clearly are 10-cars long. I do not know why someone working on timetables at Metro-North would say 12 cars when they can clearly only fit 10. I digress.
