Re: River Runner Incident 17 Jan 2020

I know of a very similar incident that happened on the KATY trail a few years ago a few dozen miles east of this spot, near Augusta. A couple was riding the trail and stopped to take a break at a bench when a boulder fell right on the guy's head and sent him to the hospital. Amazingly, he survived, ...

I don't think Illinois is any different. I went to college at Missouri State (wish we had train service there!), and our campus emptied out pretty much every weekend. Lots of students would make the 3 hour drive to STL or KC every weekend, not just for breaks. I realize it was now 20 years ago when ...

The thing with St. Louis versus the other cities you mentioned is that Illinois is running a corridor service and after the Eagle runs through, I want to say there's a 7-8 hour gap until the next local train to Chicago. I will say that the one time I took the train to Chicago where there was a late ...

My list is pretty short, but here goes:

Alton, IL
Springfield, IL
Chicago, IL
St. Louis, MO
Kirkwood, MO
Washington, MO
Jefferson City, MO
Kansas City, MO
Milwaukee, WI
Milwaukee Airport

This is purely anecdotal on my part, but one of the spots I mountain bike is adjacent to the UP line out of St. Louis that the Missouri River Runner uses. That line used to be just about all coal trains except for the 4 Amtrak trains that come through each day, but lately, I've been seeing a lot mor...

Agreed. I've only connected through Chicago once coming from STL, and that involved a trip to Milwaukee. If people want to connect to another train, they can stick to the Empire Builder, but I think the second train would be well patronized just serving traffic between the Twin Cities, Milwaukee, an...

I agree as well. $20 for a long distance trip isn't a bad price to pay. I wall caveat that with saying that if I'm buying a short distance ticket, $20 seems steep. I've taken the train STL - SPI and STL - JEF with my bike and not paid $20 for my ticket, so doubling that would make it really hard to ...

I'm not saying this is the best ratio there is, but Hermann, MO got 20,414 boardings out of a population of 2,431 in FY2014.

Transport of bicycles in LD service

Mike, while I disagree with you about the economics of the LD fleet vs. the NEC (and I live in St. Louis, the middle of fly-over country), I'm very much in agreement on being able to bring bikes on-board the LD trains. Most bikes are under 50 lbs, so other than the awkward size of them, it's not lik...

I think the big variable costs are fuel and labor. I work for a company that has airplanes, and we also include engine and prop reserves in our variable costs on the plane, but I don't know if train engines get replaced like airplane engines do, where we have to put in a new engine after every so ma...

Here's a question - If Amtrak has invested in track upgrades to improve its on-time performance, but then the host railroad then starts running more trains over the line and Amtrak trains become subject to delays again, whose should then be responsible to invest in the upgrades to keep Amtrak on-tim...

Not only is the direct line from Champaign to Danville abandoned, looking at Google Earth, most of the NS line between Bloomington and Mansfield is in serious disrepair, if not abandoned as well. Except for a little spur at Farmer City, that line doesn't show up in Google's RR layer. But living in S...

I tend to agree with the nextstl.com article. A station in E. St. Louis at this time would be a waste. The location of the proposed spot is only 3 or 4 miles from the downtown STL station. If someone living in ESL or Belleville is going to take the train towards Chicago, going to the downtown STL st...

If OTP is improving is there a chance the 1hr connection at STL to Lincoln Service trains will be shaved a bit to improve KCY-CUS timings for travellers who cannot take the SWC? While the idea sounds good, I think shortening the layover would probably make it worse for most people who are traveling...
