We're planning a few days in Vermont this August, and I don't know much about what we're doing other than 1) we're going to Vermont, and 2) we want to take Amtrak to get there. For those who have done this, if you had to pick 1 place to get off and on, where would it be? Ideally, it would 1) Have ca...
Nice picture, thanks! But if we follow current tradition, a commuting line will be named where it ends (Danbury, Waterbury, New Caanan). Accordingly, this should be called "The Springfield Line". The Danbury bomb sometimes (or used to) have a final stop in Stamford, but it would be sacreli...
"Many officials believe electrifying the Danbury Line is long overdue, and when it is finally done, it will decrease road congestion and make it easier to bring workers to employment centers." Translate that as "Many officials smell huge pork-barrel projects in the air that they can a...

And of note, the train was having issues in New Haven, so the mechanical difficulty claim isn't a euphemism for anything.
Speaking of Secaucus, why don't the folks at that terminal know anything about the "Football Train" that runs every Sunday from New Haven? Was coming back to SoNo on Sunday and nobody knew anything about it - I was told to buy Amtrak tickets to get back to Connecticut(!) Train came along r...
So, bought my tickets (very easy from ticket machine), parked at SoNo, Football train was 25 mins late due to "mechanical difficulties" but no problem. Train crew knew what they were doing, enjoyed startled faces watching NJ Transit bomb train going by. Train LURCHED hard every time brakes...
Well, Metro North did announce that as part of their focus on the customer experience, they were going to adopt a new open door policy.
Except for the Auto Train and Cardinal (why just the Cardinal?), these menu's all look exactly the same to me. Didn't Amtrak use to offer more "regional" selections that might be more interesting to travelers? I wonder how much they lose on these selections. Last I knew, that $10 cheesebur...
I think the plan is to use them as airlines do.... one for departures, one for arrivals.
It's a bit of a stretch to call that a "Tower".
But I suspect that demolishing it had more to do with liability. If some tresspassing loon drank himself to death in that building his relatives would sue the railroad before the ambulance got to the morgue.
And leaving early won't really get you home early. There are a number of trains back to Secaucus Station before the end of the game, but it appears from the schedule that there is only one train that operates through Penn Station into Metro North territory. I know, but my concern was thousands of p...
For those who may not have seen this, it's a cab's eye view of sections of the Beacon. I don't think that much of this is still active. 1990 Cab Ride on Conrail NHSE Across the Maybrook Line and Beacon Branch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r99f-Rs-0w4" onclick="window.open(this.href);retur...
True enough. But getting that 5:13 PM train out of Secaucus Junction is the whole key to the unique ride. I could plan the whole trip from SouthEast on the Harlem line and schlep across to Penn Station in about the same time anyway, but I wanted to give this a shot. But I think my 3-seat ride just b...
Okay, so I've bought my Jets tickets for November 9th and am considering getting a "one-seat ticket" to the game from South Norwalk (technically from Danbury - and I realize since we have to switch trains in Secaucus, my "one seat" is really a "three seat" from Danbury ...
