Yes it is, and it is loud. Outside the stadium, it's actually louder than passing trains (which pass by a few hundred feet away). It's used for multiple things during Falcons games (kickoffs, scores, 3rd downs, etc), and for kickoff, goals, and end of match for Atlanta United. In the stadium, it's ...

I will bet that shortly after this final service to the President, this unit will be donated and retired at the Bush Library. UP has basically held it in storage since its unveiling in 2005, specifically for this final Presidential request. Would the library even want it? To properly display it, yo...

UP has been very protective of that locomotive in recent years ... current political climates make it a tempting target.

With the damage elsewhere in the area, it would be shocking if there wasn't at least some subsidence, possibly slides.

There aren't many of them (and probably even fewer survive today), but years ago, the GTW rebuilt 36 GP9s with essentially GP38 systems (mechanical and electrical). They got new brakes, new cabs ... essentially becoming brand new locomotives in the process. Calling them GP9Rs, these became road numb...

well fire+heat+concrete does not end well; we learned that here in Atlanta with I-85. I can well believe that there's damage to track structures, since it's apparently concrete ties. Then you've got all the "stuff" from the firefighting that is now down in the ballast, and now you have sub...

the problem is, you can take the word "LIRR" and introduce practically any railroad name in the country from Class 1 all the way down to the tiniest short line.

this is a problem industry wide, whether freight or passenger. Heck, the NYC Subway hits people trespassing on the tracks.

the stunning thing about 4063 is that the frame (at least in the pictures) does not appear to have bent. I can't imagine there's much salvage to be had there, though. Even if it looks good, after the forces at work, doubtful if you could trust pretty much anything. This wreck is a very graphic examp...

while not a freight railroad, there are examples of many more powered axles on trains, mostly in commuter/subway setups. In most 3rd rail concepts, each car is basically its own "locomotive", with powered trucks. a 10-12 car long train, each with 4 axles, and each axle powered, works out t...

Wow, that's some crazy stuff, certainly one of the more "photogenic" crashes we've ever seen.

The physics and energies involved in that collision ... just amazing example of applied force.

Thank goodness everyone survived ... can only imagine their experience.

We haven't seen any kind of timeline yet, but from what we've seen so far, that's probably a good hypothesis.

Until we have more facts though it's just speculation.
